Why Agra Metro matters

Agra is one of India’s most visited heritage cities. A metro that reaches the Taj Mahal belt, Agra Fort, colleges, ISBT and the cantonment railway station changes how locals commute and how tourists move between monuments.

The Agra Metro is a rapid-transit project owned and operated by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC). Phase 1 is planned as two corridors totalling about 30 km: the Yellow Line from Sikandra to Taj East Gate, and the Blue Line from Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the priority Yellow Line stretch on 6 March 2024. That first public section links Taj East Gate with Mankameshwar and put Agra on India’s metro map. Remaining Yellow Line stations towards Sikandra, and the fully elevated Blue Line, continue as construction and trial-run work.

How fares work

Agra Metro uses a station-count slab. A one-station hop is often listed near ₹10, with higher slabs as you cross more stations. NCMC / smart cards are widely described as offering about 10% off token fare.

Rolling stock

Yellow Line trains are Alstom MOVIA-family three-coach sets, similar in look to Kanpur Metro, on standard gauge with 750 V DC third-rail electrification.

Heritage city rules

The project sits inside the Taj Trapezium Zone. Construction needed clearances from TTZ, ASI and the Supreme Court. That is why parts of the line run underground near monuments.

Interchange future

Agra College / St John’s area is the planned Yellow–Blue interchange in several public network maps. Until Blue Line opens, Yellow Line is the only passenger service.
